  • Is 512 MB of RAM enough?

By Blogger Chuang Shyue Chou, at Tue Feb 07, 04:52:00 PM GMT+8

  • Yes for now for usual tasks like TeXing and web authoring, but not if I need to run hardcore simulation and statistical software in the future. But it is easier to install RAM on my own than to upgrade the video, and HD and DVD drives later on, so I decided to "future proof" the video and storage options first. Nor I did want to spend more than US$1000 on the initial purchase. The RAM upgrade will take place in due time.

  • Finances very low(see previous entry comment) and buying a laptop? Contradiction contradiction...what's a PITA anyway?

512mb does sound kind of lightweight...

  • Finances are low precisely because I paid for the laptop from my savings, not using a credit card.

PITA = pain in the a**.

  • It doesn't look like you can join Brian and I in a game of 'Battlefield 2'. Pity.

  • Am I correct in guessing that Battlefield 2 imposes some rather exorbitant system configuration requirements, esp. in the minimum system RAM?

  • I think it will be a graphics card performance deficiency more than anything else. Then again, this 128 MB card may simply be enough for running the game with the lowest graphics settings.

  • Did you consider buying a Lenovo Thinkpad Z60t Titanium?

By Blogger Chuang Shyue Chou, at Tue Feb 14, 09:47:00 AM GMT+8

  • No, like most of the current Dell models, it's Pentium M-based. I decided I wanted a Turion 64 laptop just in case I wanted to run WinXP and Linux for x86-64.

And, deciding upon a Turion 64-based model made comparing brands, options, and prices much easier.
